Blackberry Pearl 8100 Device Software package v4.5.0.52 NOW AVAILABLE

download from Vodafone Germany

My observations:

  1. New fonts: Alpha Sans, Alpha Serif.. with alpha sans now the default font.. :-)
  2. When reading messages, 2 rounded areas visible, top area for Message Status (not seen on opening of email, need to scroll up), 2nd area for sender details, largest area for body of email.. :-)
  3. MMS now has Class as a property visible after To and before Sent.. :-)
  4. Documents To Go - but I didn't install it..
  5. Quicker loading of theme preview.. :-)
  6. When using Zen or Today style themes, the background is dropped when switching to view all applications.. uses BB background of the road.. :-(
  7. S/MIME available
  8. Option to Enable HTML email :-)
  9. Option to download images automatically
  10. The red indicator light is ALWAYS ON.. starts blinking when a new message arrives..

Instructions for installing:

  • Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads
  • Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
  • Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader
  • If you want to have access to the vendor themes as well, find the Blackberry.alx file located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8100-v4.5.0.37_P2.7.0.55\. Remove all _vendor="xxx" from this file.
  • Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.  The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process.

  • Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.
